Sometimes the best things are created by accident. The Sbagliato, or Negroni Sbagliato, is just one such happy mistake, in fact the name Sbagliato comes from the Italian word for mistake.
Legend has it that when mixing a Negroni, bartender Mirko Stocchetto reached for Gin and accidentally grabbed Prosecco while mixing cocktails in Milan’s Bar Basso in the 1970’s. Read More
As far as mistakes go, this was a pretty good one! With the recently gained popularity of both the Negroni and the Spritz, the Sbagliato is now more popular than ever.

Get nerdy with it
SPARKLING WINE – We go a little heavier on the sparkling wine here than some recipes which stick with the Negroni’s 1:1:1 ratio of ingredients. Feel free to try it out too, but we really like the lightness using 2 parts of Sparkling Water gives to this recipe.
If you want to be true to the classic ingredients of this recipe, and it’s Italian roots, then grab a bottle of Prosecco. There are so many good ones to choose from these days, for all budgets.
However, we certainly won’t get mad at you for pouring a nice Cava, or a new world sparkling wine, or of course Champagne itself! Do what tastes good to you.
SWEET VERMOUTH – It’s very much down to personal choice here, but with the ratio we use here (2:1:1), a heavier, richer vermouth works well with the increased level of sparkling wine.
If you like making Negronis, start with what you’re already using there, then maybe try something bigger and see if you prefer it. Experiment, it’s fun! Just remember to keep them in the fridge with a lid on (ideally vacuum sealed) to keep them fresh and delicious!
BITTER APERITIVO – The classic option here is Campari and there is certainly nothing wrong with that! However, the renaissance of cocktails over the last few years means that there is more demand and therefore more choice for all sorts of ingredients. From fortified wines to bitters and traditional regional spirits, there’s so much to choose from these days!
That being said, there are plenty of other delicious Bitter Aperitivos to choose from if you fancy trying something other than Campari.
Why we chose this recipe for you
WHY we chose this recipe for you…? Why? More like why would we NOT have this recipe on here! It’s essentially the lovechild of two Italian classics that have both become ever more popular in modern times, the Negroni and the Spritz.
Secondly, we often associate the Spritz with being a summer recipe. However, with its year round off-the-shelf ingredients (you could even replace fresh orange with a dried orange wheel), and rich yet bitter character, this is a Spritz style recipe that suits anytime of year.
The Sbagliato is deliciously simple to make, requires no fancy equipment or processing, and doesn’t even require a specific glass for cocktails.
