Rey Campero Mezcal
What they say
Candelaría Yegolé is a sacred place with a population of approximately a hundred, of which very few are young. The shortages, lack of employment and unpromising future, have motivated the migration of the rest of its population.
This formidable setting, where the river snakes part the town that mourns the exit of their children who “head north” in search of new dreams, is the same place where nature has capriciously covered the fertile land with agaves; there they know how to make mezcal.
The Sánchez distillery, in this corner of Oaxaca has been operating for over seven decades and is the home to the masters who have been making and learning about mezcal since its origin. Their studies have given them the experience to understand and respect the land, water and fire. For years, this family of mezcaleros share their learnings and employ various people from the community and more recently, from other villages in the region.
At this palenque, not only do they make the spirit, they also open their arms to new friendships to help rebuild their community and keep the mezcal tradition alive.
